Ayrton Mistral-S and MA3 for Creative’s Summer Shows Posted on Monday, March 4th, 2019For several months Dave Jackson, Managing Director of Creative Productions, had been searching for the ideal spot fixture to replace aging Chinese stock the business started with.“Obviously as business has grown and we’re doing better jobs, we wanted a respected brand,” began Dave. “It also had to be small, lightweight and punchy.
We looked at several brands but it wasn’t until the Ayrton Mistral-S was launched that we knew we had found the ideal fixture. It simply ticked all the boxes.”The Mistral-S is the high output version of Ayrton’s popular Mistral-TC spot luminaire. At 18.6kg and a compact size, Mistral-S outputs a spectacular 17,000lm which aligns it with an 800W/1000W discharge fixtures. The Mistral-S is designed for scenic applications and is equipped with a new LED module, delivering powerful metallic white light and a colour temperature of 6500 K.As soon as the sixteen Mistral-S arrived at Creative’s headquarters, Dave took them on the road with The Wombats and admits he fell in love with them.“They’re on all of my riders now!” he laughed. “With The Wombats they were spread across three trusses and were all onstage. It’s a wash-heavy show but the Mistral-S fixtures were great for key-lighting and doing big breakup looks. We had a 12m x 6m LED screen onstage and the Mistral-S just cut through it with ease.
They blasted through the video and blasted through the wash too.”Dave further commented that with four Mistral-S to a case, they packed well into the truck.Creative Productions were also amongst the first Australian companies to purchase an MA Lighting grandMA3 full size, with their console being delivered whilst Managing Director Dave Jackson was on the road with The Wombats.“I had our grandMA2 out with The Wombats but immediately switched to the grandMA3 mid-tour,” he revealed. “There were no issues, the show was cloned and loaded perfectly.
It was a little bit challenging in terms of finding buttons but I soon got used to the different layout.”Dave commented that he particularly likes the way that MA have reimagined the key pads, encoders and faders.“Even just hitting the key pads feels a lot nicer on the hands,” he added. “The displays are great, big with a matt finish.”. Michael Zagarn couldn’t resist MA3 Posted on Friday, March 1st, 2019Michael Zagarn is the latest lighting professional to purchase an MA Lighting MA3 full-size console saying he has always been impressed with the MA range.“Suddenly there was the right product at the right time and it was a no brainer,” he commented.
“My older consoles had paid themselves off and it was time to buy something more updated. Switching to MA was not difficult, as really all consoles do the same thing, it’s more about how it interfaces with the operator.”Michael noted that the fact that the last series of MA consoles, the MA2 range lasted ten years really attracted him to the platform as realistically the MA3 range could do the same.“I’ve had the console out on a few events and I have found it simple to use,” he added. “Once you’ve set it up to how you want it to work, it works flawlessly and the build quality is great.”Michael stated that the amazing support from Show Technology, with this purchase and in the past, was a key factor in purchasing the console.Michael’s acquisition of an MA3 is a long-term investment for him and he has no doubt that the MA3 will soon be on everyone’s rider. Sibos 2018: TDC delivers advanced video expertise Posted on Thursday, February 28th, 2019Sibos (the SWIFT International Banking Operations Seminar) is an annual banking and financial conference that has been convened in cities around the world since 1978, attracting more than 7,000 visitors who work in financial markets who participate as exhibitors and attendees and discuss issues relevant to the financial industry. In October 2018, Sibos came to Sydney for the third time, celebrating the event’s 40 th birthday.A prestigious conference of this magnitude demands the best in audiovisual support – so experience marketing agency George P. Johnson (GPJ) turned to TDC – Technical Direction Company. The brief was to deliver video solutions for the keynote addresses as well as six conference rooms.“Sibos 2006 seemed to leave an impact on our industry for years, so when GPJ contacted us nearly two years ago to say Sibos was coming to Sydney again, we immediately started putting resources aside to support this impressive event,” said Finn Coffill, project manager for TDC.Extensive resourcesThat was just as well. An event of this size and profile requires extensive resources in terms of both equipment and people.
There was, 160 square metres of ROE Carbon 3mm LED screens – yet only half of the stock owned by TDC. A further 70 square metres of ROE Black Onyx 3mm LED panels were also deployed.
To enable the large audiences to view presentations in detail, TDC used four Sony HD broadcast cameras as well as 12 Panasonic HD PTZ cameras. ‘Behind the scenes’ were Barco processors and expansion units, all fully loaded with the latest Barco tri-combo in/out cards – and no fewer than eight Dataton WATCHOUT media servers.“Thanks to the ingenuity and careful system design by Matt Teale, our Technical Project Manager, the client’s briefed system design was reconsidered, and we increased our inventory of Barco Event Master processors,” Coffill continued. “The benefits were extensive: reduced control area footprint, reduced operator count, simplified control and redundancy, and reduced hire cost. Furthermore, the challenging projection designs were replaced with LED, saving space and, surprisingly, thanks to our highly competitive LED pricing model, money.”Experienced team“The keynotes were all about the LED,” recalled Coffill, “As the stage opening was completely filled with an eye-catching design of descending arches. Balancing the brightness and temperature of the LED screens with the stage lighting for camera – both for IMAG and broadcast – takes an experienced team.
Thankfully, with our decades of TV studio experience, this was nothing new to us, and was completed before our client even cast an eye over it.”That experienced team included no fewer than 27 operators – with one remarking that Sibos 2018 was one of the most comfortable corporate shows he had ever done. Over 2,600 crew hours were spent onsite.Faultless“Corporate events of this size don’t come to town every day, or even every year, ”smiled Coffill, “and despite this overlapping with many other large projects for us – not least the Invictus Games opening ceremony – the team planned, coordinated and delivered a faultless show. It was a feat of design and coordination by our clients, and a huge team of Australia’s best suppliers – as well as suppliers from around the world – worked incredibly well to deliver a successful event.”“We would like to thank and congratulate the ICC Sydney venue, all the talented suppliers, our own tireless teams of technicians, crewing coordinators, warehouse coordinators, service technicians and, most of all, our client George P. Johnson,” he concluded. With the addition of 20 audio-reactive eye-candy effects, users now have access to more than 100 high quality built-in effects. Other cool features include:. Drive eye-candy effects with audio. Eight audio input channels.
Per-channel high/low frequency control. Per-channel volume control. ASIO support for minimum latency. Activate via remote HTTP or OSC APITo improve the rendering of fast-paced effects on low resolution LED matrices, the option to add blur across all pixels has been added and can be applied on a per-stage basis to suit each area of the user’s installation. This is perfect for giving content smoother edges and improving dimming across the user’s LEDs.ELM can now handle more media slots, allowing up to 255 locations to add the user’s media, generative effects, and live video input sources. To improve the mapping workflow, a button has been added to reverse the control points for each of the user’s strips. This is handy if the strip has been physically installed the opposite way to a user’s original plan.
Simply right-click on the first control point of a strip (the green one) and select the “reverse points” menu item. Problem solved!Furthermore, image snapshots of the positions of the LEDs on stages can be exported in png format directly from ELM. This is incredibly useful for motion designers as they can use the snapshot as a content guide. Users can find the new “LED snapshot” button under the stage tab, just next to the monitor button. For better synchronization across multiple DMX nodes, sACN sync has been implemented and can be enabled or disabled at any time. For improved performance, network usage and discovery, the NDI SDK has been updated to version 3.8.As usual, this update is free for all existing ELM license-holders, so ENTTEC encourages users to download it from the links below (or via the ELM page) as soon as they can, and start playing with some of these amazing new features. Eurovision – Australia Decides Posted on Friday, February 22nd, 2019Eurovision – Australia Decides, produced by Blink TV for the SBS network, was held at the Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre and was broadcast live to air.As with anything Eurovison, it was all about the spectacle with lighting designer Paul Collison tasked with delivering a bold and bright show with a fraction of the 3000 fixtures we see on the Eurovision finals!“It needed to be BIG,” confirmed PC. “Mark Dyson designed a beautiful set that was cosy for the performers, but allowed us to expand the scenic workspace well beyond just the stage. We created lighting positions all around the perimeter of the floor and added concentric rings of truss and light above the set. Then of course there’s the standard TV requirements of lighting the audience and creating an ambience out in the room.”PC used the GCCEC’s in-house Claypaky Axcor 600 Profiles to augment the room lighting adding that he found them very impressive.“We actually used them to light several host positions too, which I didn’t think we would be doing, and they were great,” said PC. Review: Claypaky Axcor Profile 400 Posted on Thursday, February 21st, 2019by Craig RutherfordTo take a forward-looking view of the state of the lighting industry circa early 2019, one must almost certainly come to the obvious conclusion: that arc-based sources are in their sunset years. Unlike incandescent sources before them — whose demise was more gradual in part because certain segments of our industry entertained an almost magical belief about the quality of that light source — arc lamps are, for the most part, being supplanted by a technology that provides a nearly equivalent experience to discharge sources, without any of the hassles.
LEDs last longer, run cooler, have less onerous disposal requirements, are less susceptible to shock, and have greater color stability across fixtures than arc sources. There are exceptions, but I think it’s fair to say the vast majority of shows these days are going out with LED lighting of some sort, and more and more are using hard-edged fixtures with LED engines providing the light. To read the full review go to:Australian Distributor: Show Technology. 2 x variable time positions – 20 hours per week average.
